Chapter Nineteen

NATHEN

“What’s the verdict? Am I coming with or no?” Cameron asked as Nathen came out of the bedroom.

Nathen fidgeted awkwardly clad in a large winter coat, hoodie, and baseball cap, with every place covered except his hands and the lower part of his face. Cameron ran back into the bedroom and returned, tossing him a pair of black leather gloves.

“We’re good to go. Mom said that she would love to meet you. I told her I’m having sensory issues and to close the shades in the house,” he said, pulling the leather gloves onto his hands and enjoying the soft smooth texture of the lining.

The two of them made their way to the lobby and hung out until Cameron saw the car arrive. They safely made their way into the car without incident, though Nathen was engulfed by Cameron’s waves of concern even as he held an oversized umbrella above him as they dashed to the car. He had ordered an SUV so they would have the extra room in the back to potentially stay away from the sun. Cameron relaxed a little in the back of the SUV, holding Nathen close in the middle of the back seat as they rode through the city, over the Golden Gate, and to Marin.

“Okay, so you can travel during the day. But this is crazy. I’m not convinced we should be going out like this often.” He ran his hand over Nathen’s back, keeping him pulled down. “Heh, besides. I have vague memories of making out with you in the back of a car and can’t chance it with the sun out.” He gave a mental playful pout and rested his head against Nathen’s.

Nathen agreed, “Yeah, this is a bit awkward, huh? Maybe we should wait till sundown.” He sent a mental image of them driving down the highway toward the mountains listening to “Always” by Erasure and holding hands. Cameron was in the driver’s seat, the sky was a clear blue and red with the sun setting behind them.

Though he had his head buried against Cameron’s chest, Nathen sensed a soft push of embarrassment as Cameron admitted, “I actually never learned to drive. The driver’s safety class was offered in my high school the year after I left for Leo’s—the college I went to when I was sixteen. And, well, I’ve lived in the city ever since. Maybe this?” Cameron projected the same image with Nathen driving and a questioning feeling.

Nathen smiled. “I can actually drive, but it took me a while to get over my anxiety. It only happened after I stopped seeing the cars as people. Now I see them as objects on the road that I need to avoid.”

“Is there anything else I should know about your mom? And what did you tell her? Am I still just a coworker…?” Cameron asked, hesitantly.

“Oh, no, I told her I met you through a mutual friend I work with, and said we started dating. She seemed elated.” He grinned
