Chapter Twenty-Four

At last!

She is mine.

***

He pulls me in closer. “At last, mo chridhe, yer mine.”

I push him away. “I have to-“

“Aye, lass, there’s plenty ye hae ta do, and all the more I’ll be doin’ to you.” His thick, muscled arm wraps tighter around my waist.

“No!” I push harder.

The shock registers on his face, followed in an instant by desperation. “What is it, lass? Do ye love me nae more?” He takes a step back, still reeling, but giving me my space.

I take it and then some as I wrestle my skirts back down. Then I look up into his pleading eyes and freeze.

I do love him. With every fiber of my being, I love him and I have loved him since the dawn of time. There’s a power between us, primal and ancient, linking heart to heart like a chain that will never be broken. The force of it calls me to him even now.

But-but what? Why after chasing this feeling, this connection for so long am I now too scared?

No… not scared.

Something’s wrong. Something’s changed.

I must wake up.

I kiss him, hard. “Please, my love. Wait for me.”

“For eternity,” he answers, giving me one last needful kiss before I open the closet door.

But I’m not back in the tavern amongst bawdy seamen.

I’m in a vast empty space.

And I am not alone.

Caelan Kier is nothing if not punctual.

That is why he spent the last two hours packing, repacking, checking, and rechecking his go bag. It’s why he rolled and unrolled his took pouch, meticulously counting and reorganizing. The current configuration has always worked perfectly, swiftly. But one cannot be too careful at moments like this. So he checked once more before placing both in the trunk and slowly pulling into traffic.

All in preparation to now be sitting here in the shadows.

Waiting.

He has waited so long for this moment. Spent agonizing hours, weeks, months making sure everything was just so. No room for error in his line of work. His target will be here soon and he is finally ready.

His gloved hand grips the steering wheel. The anticipation is overwhelming. He stretches his fingers, one by one, releasing the tension. One must not become agitated. Slow and steady so as not to make any mistakes.

That’s what Lorenzo always said. Caelan believes it’s why they got on so well. Caelan needed the structure in his youth. Though methodical in his daily life, once the time came to act, to really get his hands—gloves—dirty, Caelan’s inner demon took control. There was a bloodlust inside him he needed to tame. And Lorenzo was the answer.

‘Fat lot o’ good that did ye,’ his demon scoffs.

Yes, it seems his self has gotten a bit out of line recently. That business last week was not the first slip up. Caelan knows it’s getting restless. So is he.

That all ends tonight.

The door he is watching begins to open. Two figures step out. They are both shrouded in darkness, as is he. Yet one is clearly larger.

‘Now!’ His inner demon urges him on but he does not move.
