A lot happened over the next month.

That was just life, but most of it was good… So not how my life normally went. I was glad and completely appreciated it.

I truly did.

The updates to the guest house weren’t bad and done fast because Griffin’s guys either handled it after work for extra money or they knew who to contact that was trustworthy. The girls each had their own rooms—something they were thrilled about—and it was going well. Mrs. Ganan had laid down the law that they had their own area of the yard as theirs and to respect that the rest was mine.

And if they didn’t, they’d have to move and lose having their own rooms, plus make their mom sad.

Yeah, they weren’t about to risk that and wanted their own rooms more than to play in the pool alone or even on the beach. I had teased Mrs. Ganan that she couldn’t really know they’d behaved.

To which she smirked at me and told me she’d put down indication magic. If they walked past that line she’d shown them without permission, it would flare up like Christmas to her magic. And it hadn’t.

Okay then. If she trusted her magic like that, I wasn’t going to question her when I didn’t have magic.

Well, not to her face. I did a lot in my mind because there always seemed to be loopholes on a lot, and that seemed the type of thing that would have them as well. Magic in general really. I believed, but I was also a realist and had very little faith in much.

Shocking after all I’d been through.

Things had calmed down on people stalking the property and trying to get pictures of me, hounding me for interviews—all of it. Ryder was right and something else took everyone’s attention away. Several things even. There was something going on in Italy that I hadn’t really tuned into and some big scandal with some movie star cheating on her movie star husband with another movie star.

Clearly, I cared, but yeah, it was a whole thing, and Hollywood was in an uproar because they were all huge names.

All I cared about was no one cared about me anymore.

Perfect.

Well, not no one. People who wanted money still tried to contact me, but it was easy to ignore. Lala demanded to have the job of filtering through my mail because one of the first requests I’d received I’d wanted to write a check for.

“I can help them,” I’d argued when she’d snatched it away from me.

“Ryder says you gave away a ton of money already.”

“That was tax stuff,” I defended. “I’d rather give it to museums and animal rescues than the stupid government to use on corruption. This is local though.”

She had called me a loveable idiot in Spanish and then promised she would look into something local to help that wouldn’t use and abuse me. I got a lecture from her, Mrs. Ganan, and Lorenzo about being too nice and letting people take advantage of me.
