2 Vice-regal staff
To enable the vice-regal office to run smoothly and efficiently, the Governor-General and state Governors have staff to assist them in the carrying out of their duties. In some states, the Governor might have two secretaries, an Official Secretary and a Private Secretary, as well as one or more aides-de-camp and other clerical and domestic staff. The Governor-General’s household is headed by the Official Secretary. The civilian members of the Governor-General’s personal staff are generally, though not necessarily, seconded from various government departments.
The Governor-General is attended on all occasions by one of his or her aides-de-camp, usually the one responsible for the organisation of the particular function concerned. In addition, they are generally responsible for the carrying out of all formal procedures, such as escorting visitors into Government House and presenting them to the Governor-General. On many occasions, the Governor-General may also be accompanied by the Official Secretary or by another member of the personal staff.
In some states, there is an Official Secretary at Government House, who is responsible for official matters, and a Private Secretary who deals with the Governor’s personal and social program. In this case, the Private Secretary is appointed personally by the Governor, while the Official Secretary is a government appointee and acts as Secretary of the Executive Council as well as being the custodian of all property at Government House. In other states, the office of Private and Official Secretary is combined into the one role of Secretary. In like manner to the Governor-General, the state Governors are assisted by aides-de-camp who perform similar duties. They are also usually serving officers of the armed forces appointed to the staff of Government House for a specified period.
