ESCALATION OF THE COMMITMENT, ESCALATION OF CONTROVERSY 1967

The increase in the Australian commitment to Vietnam in December 1966 owed much to Holt’s personal enthusiasm. In late 1967 the Holt government made another increase, but in a very different atmosphere. The change in mood was based on developments in the different arenas in which Australia’s Vietnam War was being fought, arenas that often seemed to have little relationship to each other: Australian politics, both inside and outside Parliament; the global battle for Western public opinion; the course of the war between Hanoi and Washington; and the small war being fought by the Australian task force in Phuoc Tuy province.
