“Do you want to stay with me while I cook?” Lait asked me.
“Yes.”I said decidedly, because I was not going to leave his side in the next week, not for anything.
The eggs he was previously working on had been completely ruined. In the excitement of learning that I was pregnant and him going out to get the capsule, he had completely forgotten they were on the stove.
So he started again, cracking one of the bright blue eggs into one of his hand-made pans. I still wasn’t sure how he had made them, but considering he had just gotten a spaceship to work I didn’t really doubt his abilities.
I watched intently as he began to scramble our eggs, knowing that this is how I preferred to eat them. I pictured him doing this for the rest of our lives, what it would be like to have him cooking eggs while I nurse the baby in the living room chair.
What he would be like with a toddler running around, begging for their breakfast to be done. I pictured him laughing, being as patient and strong with our children as he had always been with me. I could even picture him teaching our adolescent child how to cook for the first time, maybe even how to hunt or how to woodwork.
I was now acutely aware of all the things that he could do, all that he could provide, that I never would be able to for our kid. I wished that, if one of us had to go, it could be him carrying our baby flying off to another planet. I had a feeling he would make the better parent if it could only be one of us.
Lait took notice of my silence. “What are you thinking about, my dear?” He asked sweetly, the same way he would on any other day.
“About how you’d make a better parent than I would.” I answered honestly.
His attention broke from the eggs he was cooking and he stared at me, looking a little bit upset. “Lexi, you’re going to be an amazing mother. Do not doubt that.”
“How do you know?” I asked seriously. “How could you possibly know that?"
“Because I know you. Because you are a stunning, intelligent, capable, kind and loving woman. Because I have seen how you nurture me and our relationship, and I know that you will nurture our children in the same way. Because I have been able to picture you as a mother from the second I began to love you, you were built for motherhood. You will be a strong enough mother to make up for the absence of a father.” He said with his hand on my cheek.
I smiled as I took his compliment. “Don’t forget about your eggs!” I reminded him, because I wasn’t sure what else to say.
“Of course not.” He turned back to them.
I soaked in his words and felt a lot more comfortable. Nobody was ever able to comfort and assure me as well as Lait could.
