a formula known as the universal logarithmic velocity prafile for aerodynamically smooth flow. (Somewhat surprisingly, considering the restrictive nature of the assumption τ=constant, this expression agrees closely with observations not only near the wall but right up to the centre of the pipe.)

In the case of fully rough flow viscosity plays a negligible part in the determination of the skin friction, so that the only two lengths which enter into the argument are z (or l) and ε. The solution of equation 4.21 in this case is of the form
