Part 2: One Year Later

The Return

The Bahamas. This was where it all started almost a year ago.

Sara stared out over the view of the ocean from their little condo for the next week. Spring Break would be different this year. So much had changed.

"Sara?"

A warm hand settled on her bare shoulder. She looked up at the lean, sandy-haired man next to her and sighed. He wasn't Darian, but Ethan was a good guy. He'd asked her out by slipping her a note while she had rung up his items in her cashiering lane on a busy day in January. He showed promise, so she'd gone out and enjoyed herself, or at least she told herself she did. She hadn't felt like dating for a long time, but her friend Stacy had insisted that she give him a chance.

Through the spring and summer after her return, she'd been interviewed everywhere—newspapers, radio, television—and had had to hire a manager. By the time fall came, and she had to repeat the last semester, the requests had waned to nearly nothing. Life had returned to normal.

No one knew about Darian and what really had happened on the island.

She smiled up at the chiseled features of Ethan's handsome face and the deep arcs in his cheeks when he smiled. A pre-med student with lots of potential, he had all the good looks and charm to put him on the top of any girl's list.

"It's beautiful," Ethan said. His hand rubbed her back a little before he dropped it to her waist.

It certainly was as beautiful as she remembered.

"Let's go for a walk on the beach," she said. Feeling the sand between her toes would take her back.

In a few minutes, they walked on the hot sand along the edge of the water rushing up the beach with each wave rolling in, although Ethan stayed just out of the water with his shoes on. Sea foam tickled her ankles and splashed along her legs with each step, carrying her back to the day she didn't follow Darian into the water. She had stood at the edge, afraid of going deeper and drowning.

And then the Coastguard had found her and taken her away.

Her heart had broken that day, when she woke up from the dream of being in love. Life had changed for her.

The wind blew her white skirt around her legs as she walked.

Ethan said nothing, content as he was to wait on her. It piled the guilt on her. He'd always been kind and thoughtful, but her heart had never healed. He deserved someone better, but she wasn't ready to give him up. She kept hoping to fall in love, but it wasn't happening.

Still, she walked along the beach, passing people enjoying
