They settled on Oz’s back porch, Amelia easing into the old rocker Adrienne was once so fond of.

Despite asking after his whiskey, she declined a glass when Oz handed her one.

“I’m going to Ophélie tomorrow to talk to Nicolas. I know the Runeans aren’t arriving for another month or so, but I don’t think he has the first idea how to get the property in order,” she said, slumping on the wicker chair, knees pulled tight to her chest.

“I agree he could use your help,” Oz mused with a half-hearted chuckle. “But if you’re thinking it will make you forget about everything... well, it won’t.”

Her large, sad eyes implored him as she gazed from where her head rested sideways atop her drawn knees. “You forget, I’ve been pushing away the bad stuff all my life. If there were an Emotional Olympics, I’d take home the gold medal.”

Oz smiled. “I bow before your expertise on the matter,” he teased, “but some losses are meant to be felt.”

“You’re in no position to talk,” she reminded him. “But I don’t disagree. I think some losses should be felt, and you’re not going to start your grieving process as long as I’m a stone’s throw away.”

Oz considered this, recalling his grandfather’s words. “I don’t know if having you close makes things easier, or harder,” he replied. “The last thing I want is to be the cause of your anguish.”

“You aren’t,” she assured him. “But you’re not the cure, either.”

All around them, the night was alive with the trills of frogs, crickets; the lyrical song of cicadas. But neither Oz nor Amelia said another word, the silence swallowing their worries.

Eventually, he heard her breaths lighten, and, realizing she’d fallen asleep, he placed a small throw over the top of her. Grabbing a second for himself, he took the chair next to her, and was asleep in minutes.
