CHAPTER SIX
HIS words seemed to ring in Nikkiâs head. Iâll never get myself into this situation again, Seth had said.
Well, Nikki thought, that certainly let her know where she stoodâ¦
Hold it a minute, she told herself. And exactly which part of that didnât you already know?
Seth had made it quite clear from the beginning that it was only his sense of responsibility toward his brotherâs twins which was keeping him involved here. As far as that was concerned, Nikki had to agreeâfond as she was of the babies, if sheâd had any idea she was signing up for a week of full-time duty instead of just a few days, sheâd have run for the hills rather than volunteering.
And as for the idea that Seth helping out had anything to do with being interested in Nikki herselfâ¦only a fool would think that there was anything to that.
And only a fool would want to, she told herself briskly.
This whole experience was obviously softening her brain. The sooner Laura got home, the sooner Nikki got back to her regular routine, and the sooner Seth got back to his blondes, the better it would be for all of them.
âDo you have a favorite supermarket, or will any one of them do?â Seth asked.
Nikki had to pull herself back to the present. âOhâright, the groceries. Never mindâIâll take care of that later. You must be anxious to get to work.â
âNot particularly,â he said dryly. âEverybodyâs going to be upset with me today.â
So that was why heâd really come along. Not to give her a hand; not even because he expected to be amused by the confrontation in the photo studio, but simply because he didnât want to go to work.
Donât take it personally, she told herself. Given the choice between going to the mall with Seth and the twins or showing Neil Hamilton half a dozen more houses, sheâd take the mall over going to work, too.
She kept her voice light. âWhy? Is it the client Zack hung up on that youâre avoiding, or the one whose building permit he scribbled all over?â
âOh, nuts, Iâd forgotten about the building permit.â
âWell, if itâs still readable, maybe it wonât matter.â
âLetâs hope so, or when heâs thirty heâll be still doing odd jobs to work off the extra fees.â
Nikki tried to smother a grin. That was pretty obviously an idle threat, coming from the same guy whoâd figured out a way to give Laura a new dishwasher without making her feel patronized. âThat might actually please his mother.â
âBecause heâll have a guaranteed job?â
âAnd she wonât have to worry about building a college fund for him, if heâll be too busy picking up nails and emptying trash to go to school.â
âIâll keep that in mind. Do you want me to move the car seats or leave you the SUV?â
Nikki raised her eyebrows. âYouâd actually trust me with your car again?â
âOnly because itâs pretty difficult to get myself far enough into yours to tighten things down.â
He could just dump the seats in the driveway and tell her to take care of it herself.
