Summary

For each ISS assembly mission, the relocation of hardware by the use of robotic arms and spacewalks were the headliners. As important as these were to the overall success of the program, we must not neglect the internal transfer of tons of supplies, logistics and other materials both into and out of the various pressurized modules of the station and Orbiter compartments.

This was a major logistics challenge, because nothing like it had been attempted in space before, even though for over twenty years the Russians had used small Progress craft to ensure the longevity of their Salyut and Mir stations. The ISS was an entirely different proposition, being far larger, more complex, and an international venture. It required not only to be built in space but also to be supplied, and teams of crews from several countries had to learn to live and work together to pursue common goals. The ISS is the largest international construction project in space history. It also became an excellent example of multi-cultural teamwork, spread over many years and across the globe. What some might have thought impossible on Earth, and seemed at times to be unattainable, would eventually prove to be very successful in space.
