Exiled once more

When Lenin became ill and died in 1924, a bitter power struggle, both ideological and personal, took place between Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. Stalin triumphed; Trotsky was expelled from the party, and once more found himself in exile. He travelled around Europe and then went to live in Mexico, where he continued to write about the progress of the revolution, and to agitate against Stalin’s increasingly vicious regime. Not surprisingly, Trotsky’s activities made him extremely unpopular with Stalin and the Communist government in the USSR. It was not long before he began to receive visits from the NKVD, the Russian Secret Service, at his home in Coyoacán, Mexico City. In May 1940, assassins conducted a raid on the house, aided by the Mexican painter David Siqueiros, who supported the Stalinist regime. Even though the attackers fired several rounds of bullets at the house, miraculously all the occupants escaped unharmed. A few months later, however, on 20 August, a second attack took place; this time, it was successful.
