Chapter Six

Few sinners are saved after the first twenty minutes of a sermon.

A cabin west of Carson City, Nevada – November 22, 1864

The sun woke her, a happy woman, in the arms of her lover. She wondered what devious events lay ahead, conspiring to pull them apart.

Sitting up, she looked around. It seemed early and outside the beddings, it was cold, very cold. She saw Cody trudging up to the Franklin stove with an armload of firewood. He noticed her watching him and cast a warm smile. “Sorry we let the fire burn down. I’ll have it back up shortly.”

She didn’t say anything but pulled the covers higher on her breasts and nodded. The noise of him tossing logs in the stove reverberated through the cold shack.

“It sounded like you had a nice talk last night.” His voice was edged with sarcasm.

It was hard to remember where the real sex had stopped and her erotic dreams had started. She smiled. “Yes, we had a lot to talk about.”

He chuckled as he threw some kindling and paper in the door. “It sounded like some of the things you talked about got you pretty excited.”

He struck a wooden match against the stove and when the flame was born, threw it in the firebox. “There. In fifteen minutes it should be warm.” When she didn’t respond, he went on. “Anyway, Cory and I couldn’t help but hear when your talking got you excited. It kinda stayed in my mind. And when I went to bed, I hope you don’t mind, but I pretended I was talking to you, if you know what I mean.”

She knew exactly what he meant. She needed to change the subject. “Tell me, Cody, how did it work out with you, Maude, and Chana?”

He chortled and clapped his hands together. “Oh, my, that was wonderful.” He came around the stove and sat across from her on the edge of the other bed. “Let me tell you, they loved it, too. I just hope they haven’t spoiled me for enjoying one woman at a time.”

She noticed Duke startle at Cody’s handclap. He glanced around, saw that it was Cody, and turned back over, she assumed to sleep some more.

When Duke rolled over, the bedding slipped down, revealing her right breast, so she quickly re-covered it. Naturally, Cody noted it and smiled mischievously. “I knew they’d be nice.”

She blushed but didn’t respond.

The corners of Cody’s lips curled upward into a devilish grin. “You should try it sometime. I’ll bet you’d love it.”

“Two girls and a guy. No, thanks, unless it’s something Duke wanted.”

He shook his head. “No, I meant a threesome for you—you and two men.”

To her chagrin, as she had that first day at Rosie’s, her temperature rose as she pictured herself with Duke and him. She wondered if interest showed on her face. “Duke and you, I suppose.”

His wicked smile revealed that was exactly what he was thinking. “If that’s what you want.”

Cody was being much too suggestive, and she felt uncomfortable.
