Chapter Twelve

The walk to Dick’s house had been too quick. I didn’t feel remotely prepared. Kind of like the actor’s nightmare where you find out you have to go onstage on opening night with a full audience in attendance, but realize you haven’t gone to one single rehearsal. Or even worse, the nightmare where you’re onstage only to glance down and discover you’re naked. Uncle Joe would be fine with that one. I would not.

As stressed out as I was, I really didn’t want to die. Finding out if Dick was trustworthy—as far as Demons went—was necessary. Taking him at his word was unwise. Having Uncle Joe spy didn’t seem like the best way to go about it, but the choices were not many. Improv was the name of the game. I preferred a nice long rehearsal period instead of pulling it out of my ass, but my preference was irrelevant right now.

“I’m going to knock,” I whispered, gathering my courage.

“Good plan,” Uncle Joe whispered back. “Knock hard with authority. Be decisive. No wimpy knocks. Let Dick know you mean business.”

“Okay,” I said, frozen in my spot. I didn’t have any idea what I was going to talk to Dick about. I didn’t want to talk to him at all. Avoiding him was better for my sanity. However, we’d concocted a plan. It was kind of a shitty plan, but walking toward the danger was better than running away.

“Are you going to knock?” Captain Nude-man asked.

I raised my hand to the wood then pulled it back. “I am. I mean, I think I am.”

“We can do this tomorrow,” he offered kindly. “No reason to do it now. Let’s go home and dance some more.”

“You know,” I said, feeling light-headed and jittery, “that might be a good idea. I didn’t really prep for this. Might help if I write a little script. Dick is pretty freaking scary.”

“Works for me,” Uncle Joe replied.

“Great.” My sigh of relief was enormous.

The door to Dick’s house opened. The man in question had opened it.

My horror-movie-worthy scream was unintentional… and wildly embarrassing.

“WHAT?” Uncle Joe shouted.

Quickly tapping the back of my coat so Captain Nude-man would pipe down, I plastered a smile on my face. It felt incredibly fake, but it was the best I had. “Dick. Oh my gosh! What a surprise!”

I wanted to kick my own ass. The line sucked. I sounded like an idiot.

The Demon squinted at me and stood in the open doorway of his home. I hadn’t knocked. Had he felt my presence? Did Demons have Spidey-senses? Sadly, he looked ridiculously gorgeous—faded jeans that sat low on his hips and a sapphire-blue t-shirt… that matched his contact lenses. Bingo. If I could quit sticking my foot into my mouth and yanking it out of my butt, we could figure out if Dick could see Uncle Joe.

Dick’s brow arched and he crossed his stupidly muscled arms over his broad chest. “It’s a surprise that I’m at my house?”

“Well, kind of,” I said, shoving him out of the way and walking in.
