As the crow flies a popular and picturesque expression to denote a straight line.

William Henry Maule

Work the next day still sees me on a bit of a life high. Vale and I sat on the couch talking most of the night, taking the time to truly get to know one another. For as human as he isn’t, he is. There was more connection and conversation than I’ve ever had with another person, ever. We laughed, we told our deepest secrets, and it amazed me to see a man who was willing to be so open and vulnerable without worrying about looking weak or less than. Refreshing in his honesty I felt myself falling even harder for the mysterious—or not so much anymore—Vale.

And we didn’t even have sex.

Smiling like a loon, I give out the trays and go about my normal routine. Several times a few of the friendlier residents ask me if I got laid and I laugh it off. I didn’t, but man, I wouldn't trade the precious time we spent together for any amount of orgasms.

Well, mostly. Call it instinct but I think any orgasm Vale gives me will be something along the lines of ultimate-gasms. Shaking my head at the path of my thoughts I stop outside of Samson’s room. The happy-high crashes like a meteor, leaving a crater of guilt and sadness.

The guilt I shake off, it’s misplaced and I know that. The sadness though, lingers. Samson—if he’s still alive, is in a scary place and Lila too. I need to get them out of there and today, the first chance I get, I’m going to try and figure out how.

The door is shut and I debate whether I should look inside or not, just in case they returned him.

“Why are you fucking lallygagging outside the door, give me my food you human wretch!” A man yells from behind me. I turn and come face to face with someone I haven’t seen before. He’s standing in the doorway of one of the normally empty rooms, and with the exception of the runes tattooed on his cheek, he looks as human as I do.

That other vision I have, shows me this strangely blank spot around him. The purple fog that always exists looks as if it’s repelled by him. That’s strange.

“Hi, I’ll get to you shortly. There’s an order I have to follow,” I say, attempting to sound polite. When his face scrunches up in annoyance, I don’t think I succeeded. Staring at him, I realize the difference between him and the others here.

He’s a Runin.

No idea why I’m so sure of that, but he is and for some reason, his own people put him in here. How bad does one have to be for those awful people to imprison him?

“Bitch, you’re already here—just hand me my plate of pig feed and go on your way,” he says sneering. The smart part of my brain says to hand him his food and be on my way. For all I know he’s some kind of spy that was put in here to watch everyone.
