Brayden will never win an award for long-winded text messages, but I’ve learned to read between the lines. He must know something about Claude. Something that makes him a bigger threat if he wants me to keep an eye on Mandi’s house tonight.

Captain Barnes: Don’t mention this to her.

Arrow: 10-4

An overwhelming urge to tell Mandi the truth sweeps through me. In my heart, it feels wrong to withhold a threat from her. But the logical part of me—the one that’s been trained to protect and serve—knows it’ll only worry her. I’ll keep her safe at all costs.

“Thought you got lost out there,” she teases when I finally get inside the truck.

“Had to…adjust some things.” It’s not a lie. My dick went down pretty quick after that string of texts, though. “I need to swing by the station to grab a few things. I’ll drop you off at home.”

The disappointment is mutual, and it’s not just our expressions that give it away. It’s the aura in the cab of the truck. It’s better this way.

“I thought about going for a hike out here tomorrow,” I say, torn between my duty to protect Mandi from that creep and to the desire to spend more time with her. If I don’t find a reason to see her tomorrow, Brayden will give me hell for leaving her alone. But I also know I won’t be able to keep my hands to myself. I’m fucked either way. “Wanna come?”

“You want to go hiking?”

“Yeah, why not?”

“Okay. Sounds like that’s our plan then.”

I guess if I’m going to face a death sentence, I might as well go out as happy as possible.
