Chapter 11

There were, in fact, plenty of things to do in the crystal lagoon—enough to ease the restlessness Bianca felt in her soul as Tammy took over for Marx and toured her through the rest of the underground hidden space. Admiring the light playing over surfaces was already pleasant in itself but finding out they had cross-bred selected fruits and vegetables blew her mind.

“Is that a mutation of ginger and watermelon? How does that work?”

She perused the odd combination and watched as Tammy caressed it lovingly.

“That’s my baby,” the Fae announced, beaming proudly. Her sleek, toned figure matched her twin’s, muscles bunching now and then when Tammy exerted effort. “What a beauty, right?”

Bianca wouldn’t call it a beauty, but curiosity spiked about how it would taste. Tammy pointed out a few more hybrids before they returned to the main attraction rounding the lagoon, which danced between blue and white upon closer inspection. The Fae bent down, cupped some water, and let the clearness trickle from her fingers.

“Are those the crystals you used to stop the blue fire?”

Tammy grimaced as if the memory of the incident still pained her. Perhaps it did. Her brown complexion glittered beautifully as she twirled, her arms spread.

“These are rocks, as you see. They are unpolished and useless at this point. But this is where the magic happens. This water right here can alter those rocks to be useful in different ways depending on temperature, length of polish, way, and motion of polishing. They say it’s a miracle, but I think it’s just two magical components being compatible with each other.”

“In conclusion, the water’s also useless until it’s useful?” Bianca deduced.

Surprise had Tammy’s brows furrowing before she shrugged. “Water’s always useful. So, I take it that our leader brought you here to show you our ways.”

“I guess.” She didn’t mention the boredom part, not wanting to offend the Fae.

Tammy knelt beside the lagoon, arm extending deep into the water and the glow spreading like a veiny, living thing towards her shoulder. A rock lay on her fist when she pulled it out, significantly less dull than the ones on the wall. She rolled it around her palms, rubbing with her thumb diagonally in between rolls.

“This will be useful for healthy cross-breeds in a month or two.”

“And for stopping blue fires?”

Tammy shook her head. “Those take a few years to develop. The ones to heal deadly injuries take a while, too, while non-mortal wounds take lesser. We don’t use them as weapons.”

“Why not?”

“Because if people found out about these crystals, they will do everything they can to get their hands on it.”

A chill went down her spine, understanding the sentiment. She tried to follow Tammy’s movements but couldn’t take her eyes off the water, calling to her until she tentatively dipped a hand in.

“Be careful,” Tammy warned. “It reacts well to our kind but doesn’t take kindly to other creatures…or maybe it does. Are you sure you’re just a shifter?”

“I’m just a shifter,” Bianca confirmed, smiling at her glowing arm.
