Chapter Twenty

The good citizens of Saguaro Gulch celebrated the Spring Fling with ample beverages and homemade cooking. After Phoebe’s amiable departure, which Ari still didn’t understand, she agreed to eat with Quinn. Wasn’t long before Donnor and Connell escaped the pretty young women who’d been hanging on their arms and joined Ari and Quinn. Like bugs drawn to a porch light, Lynn and Tess appeared and they all enjoyed the country meal together.

A tall man with a hefty gold ring on his right baby finger lumbered up to their table with a bow-legged gait. “Quinn,” he greeted.

“Carter.” He nodded. “Like you to meet our new neighbors. They moved into the Taylor Ranch. Tess, Lynn and Ariana, this is Carter Bell.”

Ari glanced across the table at Quinn. This had to be Phoebe’s father.

“Ladies.” Carter plucked the ten-gallon cowboy hat from his head for a split second then replaced it, along with a businesslike expression on his face. “Quinn, was wondering if I could have a private word with you this evening?”

“Have a seat.” Quinn ordered, more than invited.

“Wanted a private word,” Carter Bell surveyed everyone at the table.

Unconcerned, he said, “My brothers know my business, and I know theirs.”

“It’s about Phoebe,” the man added, as if that would make a difference in who heard the conversation.

“Sweet girl,” Quinn stated, then drained his bottle of beer.

“She’s my only daughter, and I want her to have the best. She sees that in you. She also has her heart set on being your wife.”

The left side of Quinn’s mouth rose. “You’re a good man looking out for your daughter’s interests, Carter, but I have no intention of marrying her.”

“Have your focus somewhere else then?” Phoebe’s father asked. His eyes came to rest on Ari.

What the hell! He better not drag her into this drama. She put her attention back on her potato salad.

A slow smile curled Quinn’s lips. “Phoebe’s twenty-one. That’s a bit of a gap for me.”

Carter’s gaze lingered in a daze for a moment, then he blinked. “My girl can be a little impetuous, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit her mother and I were hoping you’d become our son-in-law.”

“I appreciate the thought, Carter.”

Connell and Donnor watched discreetly from below the rims of their hats. Tess and Lynn had split hearing, capable of carrying on a conversation and monitoring everything within a five-hundred-mile radius.

“I’m disappointed,” Mr. Bell said. “But glad we straightened that out. You and your brothers are always welcome in my home. I’m sure Phoebe wouldn’t mind seeing you from time to time either. Might change your mind.”

Quinn’s gaze flitted to Ari’s. “Don’t think so, Carter. I have to admit, think I’ve been struck by lightning.”

“Damn.” He shook his head. “You’re seeing someone else. Phoebe’s little heart will be broken.”

Quinn’s polar blue eyes didn’t veer from her for a second. Struck by lightning, huh. She almost laughed out loud. She wasn’t certain whether he meant what he said or was just using her as an excuse.

“It was unexpected, but she’s an incredible woman, and she’s got my undivided attention.
