Chapter Seven

Arik watched Abbie out of the corner of his eye as she sat next to Obra. They were talking about something humorous, and every so often, she would toss her head back with a laugh. He could not keep his eyes from tracing the delicate line of her arched throat.

Golan and Hrer were troubled by his fascination with the woman. They didn’t trust her because she looked too much like the dark ones and the mistress, but Arik didn’t care. He knew Abbie was different. She was incapable of committing the monstrous acts the dark ones did when they got their hands on you.

Abbie was sweet and soft. The darks ones weren’t. They were monsters. They put more fear into the men of this land than any of the beasts that roamed these woods. His brothers were ridiculous for thinking Abbie was anything like the ones who served the mistress.

And speaking of the idiots, here they came.

Golan lumbered over to where he stood next to the station where they prepared the food. The frown on his face cut deep lines into his forehead, and his dark eyes spoke more words than Golan himself ever would. He was very unhappy with Arik.

“I couldn’t have left her out in the woods. She would have died out there by herself.” Arik crossed his arms over his chest and gave Golan a frown of his own. It wasn’t as impressive, but that was because Golan had a lot more practice with the look than him.

Golan towered over him and shook his head. “Leave.”

He threw his arms out in a burst of anger. “No. And if you and Hrer have such a problem with sharing, then maybe you two should go on a long hunting trip. It might do you two some good.”

“The mistress.”

“You don’t need to worry about her. If Abbie were important to her, she would already be here.” Arik sighed, setting a hand on his brother’s arm. “She’s safer here. We know what it’s like out there, and this is our home. She unaware of the dangers this land has.”

Golan breathed deeply but didn’t say anything more. His eyes still glinted with displeasure, and Arik didn’t like that. They needed to get to know her better than they would not be so worried. That was it. “Why don’t you and Hrer go hunting with me? We can have a big feast tonight, and you two can get to know Abbie better.”

He glanced over to where she sat, his frown lessening some, then looked back at Arik and nodded.

Arik smiled. “I’ll go get Hrer.”

Golan snorted before turning away and heading toward the supply cave to retrieve his spear.
