Laurel had drawn a picture of herself on the left side of the card. She was riding a musical note that looked like a horse. Ariel was holding the reins, leading. A rainbow of smaller musical notes arched around them.

Ariel sighed. It was so sweet of Laurel to thank her. And the drawing was lovely. But the note wasn’t for Calista. Ariel had been so sure the card would hold a clue.

She touched the shimmering star shell hanging from her neck. If only she could wish for Laurel to come home.

Miss Summers read the card over Ariel’s shoulder. “Oh!” she said, disappointed. “The card is for you. I’m sorry.”

The teacher looked closely at the picture. “Laurel really is my star student. Look at this drawing! She has such an imagination.”

“She certainly does,” Ariel said.

“I ask my students to draw a picture each day,” Miss Summers continued. “Just yesterday, I had the class draw pictures called ‘My Best Friend.’ Laurel couldn’t wait to get started.”

“My Best Friend?” Ariel exclaimed. She and Miss Summers looked at one another.
