“The Runaway.” Stereotype cut used in many notices seeking the capture of slaves who escaped from their masters. From the Anti-Slavery Record, published by the American Anti-Slavery Society in New York in July 1837.

“Effects of the Fugitive-Slave-Law.” Published in New York, this lithograph illustrated the plight that African Americans, some slaves and others free, suffered under the Fugitive Slave Act passed as part of the congressional Compromise of 1850. African Americans were pursued and captured under terms of the Act, even in the free state of California, where Archy Lee struggled for his liberty in 1858.
