Chapter 6

Tamara looked out the plane window as the bird banked, tilting its wing down towards the city far below. Gentle mountains, rippled and pale, ringed a peaceful scape of buildings that, even from a distance, she could tell were crafted with utmost care and elegance. A dome-topped cathedral loomed over it all, like a proud mother watching her children.

Archie leaned close to her, resting his chin on her shoulder. “It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

“That cathedral…” She hesitated, unwilling to continue. Was that even the right word for it? She knew very little about other countries, and even less about their specific cities and what made them special. For all she knew, that grand building with its marble panels and ornate facades.

“It is a cathedral,” Archie confirmed. “The Cathedral. Florence Cathedral. We won’t be visiting there, but we’ll be able to see it from the rooftop terrace. You can look at it and look at it until you’re sick of it.”

“I can’t believe you actually convinced me to come here.” Her ears popped as the plane continued to lower, sweeping over the clustered rooftops.

“Honestly, I brought it up partly to see if you’d go along with it,” Archie admitted.

Tamara swung around, thrown off-balance by the casual remark. “You’re joking with me. That’s it? That’s all?” A pang went through her heart.

Archie held up his hands. “Hey, no, I said that was partly the reason. There’s more. Keeps appearances up, doesn’t it, if we go on a honeymoon? No one will question our marriage now that we’ve shown we’re serious enough about it to take an entire week all to ourselves.”

Tamara sighed and just looked at him. “Maybe people will think you have the money to burn away, Mr. Billionaire.”

Archie frowned, then shrugged. “Maybe you’re right. And maybe I do have the money to spare. Though, I do have to be careful. I don’t want to dip below a billion or I’ll lose my position with the Society.”

Some of the Sunrise Society members he was closest to, including a few invited by his brother, had attended their wedding. She’d met them and found them to be fairly average people. Some were snooty. Another had been busy getting drunk at the free bar. Most acted like polite guests and she had treated them as such.

“Would they really be so strict?” she asked.

The plane came in for a landing, touching its wheels down on a runway so smoothly there was hardly a difference between being in the sky and cruising on land.

“They would. It’s protocol. They don’t make allowances.”

“Then maybe we shouldn’t be doing this.”

Archie heaved a great sigh. “We purchased this package. We aren’t going to get a refund if we cancel it. We needed to keep up appearances. You need to relax. I needed an excuse to take my first-ever vacation. We’re here and we’re doing it, so we may as well enjoy it.”

Someone in the row behind them muttered, “Amen.”

Archie grinned and jabbed his thumb over his shoulder, like she could possibly have missed what just happened.
