Chapter 18

R hodri ground his teeth to keep the scream from tearing from his throat as the red-hot iron melted the skin on his chest. The acrid smell of his own burning flesh choked him. He jerked against the cords that bound him. It had been at least four days since he awoke to find himself staked to the ground. He had been beaten, starved, and now branded. Darkness swam before his eyes, swirling with the flickering light of the torches and hooded figures that loomed over him.

"Where are they going?"

Rhodri blinked with heavy eyelids. He tried to focus his mind on Finn, but his mind wouldn't stay still. It roamed through his past, casting up images of Finn teaching him to fight, of the old woman helping him memorize the history of Coll, the thin, slave girl with whom he had shared his first kiss, and of the men he had defeated in the fighting ring.

The scream escaped his throat as another red-hot iron jerked him back to the real world of searing pain and agony.

"I don't think he knows anything." It was a voice that Rhodri hadn't heard before. "He might be telling the truth."

Someone cursed and kicked Rhodri in the side.

"Prince Tomas will be here in a few days," the voice said. "Let him decide what to do with our prisoner."

Lara glanced around wondering where Tyg had gone. Redmond had set off in search of a good spot to await Brion's return. He had left Emyr to guard the women and Hayden, who was still tied to a juniper. There had been no time to continue questioning him. Tyg had a habit of disappearing without a sound only to reappear when no one expected him. Lara thought he might have gone with Redmond.

By Tyg's own account, he had no reason to remain with them. Neahl and Jaxon were both dead. The company no longer harassed the Dunkeldi. Tyg had kept his end of the bargain and could have left at any time. But he had stayed.

She had seen the way Tyg watched Brion and the girls, but she couldn't figure out what it meant. She was a good judge of character, and, unless she was wrong, Tyg was mostly bluster. He wasn't the cold-hearted assassin he claimed to be. Nor was he the disinterested sot he appeared. There was more to him. And now he had disappeared without a word. Lara couldn't decide if he had finally abandoned them.

"Lara?" Finola's voice broke into her thoughts.

"Yes?" Lara said. She had grown close to these two young women in the last few weeks. They had become something like daughters to her. It hadn't taken her long to see why men like Emyr and Brion would be drawn to them. Not only were they beautiful, they each exuded an inner strength and confidence. Lara imagined that it grew from the dangers they had been forced to overcome.

"Do you know anything about the Duke of Saylen and Weyland?" Finola asked.
