and the detection is actually carried out by an ISE that is selective for one of the products of the equilibrium reaction, in this example a -sensitive ISE, working in conjunction with a reference electrode, in the internal solution. Such gas-sensing electrodes have also been developed for a variety of other gases, including CO2 (using a pH electrode), NO2 (using a nitrate-selective electrode), H2S, HF, HCN, and NH3 [2].

6.4.5 Non-specific Multisensors

It is possible to make simultaneous potentiometric determinations of all the components of a mixture by using an array of poorly selective sensors having different selectivity coefficients [9]. Since the response of a potentiometric sensor to a multicomponent mixture can be fully predicted (based on Eq. (6.6)), once the selectivity coefficients of all of the active species are known, by using a sufficient number of sensors that respond to multiple components of the mixture one can generate a system of independent equations sufficient to yield the concentrations of all of the analytes, if the mathematical solution can be determined. Using currently available computing power it may be possible to deconvolute the linked set of electrode responses by multivariate regression, statistical approaches, or for very complicated mixtures, pattern recognition and artificial neural networks [7, 9, 10]. This approach can be used to produce what is commonly called an “electronic tongue” that in one “taste” of a mixture can determine its composition or at least distinguish it from another very similar mixture. For example, such a “tongue” has been used to distinguish various samples of wines [11].
