Steric Stabilization

Most latex paints are stabilized using anionic dispersant molecules to provide electrostatic repulsions. Solvent-based paints, however, cannot use this type of dispersant molecule because the organic solvents used in these paints do not support electrical charges. In these paints, as well as in some latex paints, particles are stabilized against flocculation using steric dispersants. Like their ionic kin, steric dispersant molecules are short polymeric chains that contain anchoring groups. In this case, however, the remainder of the dispersant molecule solubilizes, creating a thick shell around the pigment (or extender) particle. For thermodynamic reasons the shells on different particles cannot interpenetrate, and so the particles are physically prevented from approaching one another.
