WHEN THEY LANDED, SHE took him straight to the ticket counter at the gate, and bought two more tickets in cash, this time to Athens. She had procured a false ID for him in Houston from a friend who owed her a favor, one more woman in her network of rescued women. Addy had never thought she would need to call on one of them to rescue her.

“I’ll pay you back,” he had said in Houston when he watched her shell out cash for the fake passport and driver’s license. He said it again as he accepted the boarding pass for the flight to Greece.

Addy led him toward a kiosk where coffee from Amsterdam was brewed and sold scalding hot. She moved to buy two, but he paid for them quickly, before she could reach into her backpack again. He handed her an extra twenty dollar bill as well.

“This is yours,” he said. “You tried to pay for our coffee in Jackson Square.”

Addy smiled in spite of herself. From any other man, she would have found his insistence on paying for their sustenance annoying. But coming from Steve, that hint of machismo was somehow endearing.

“You did not kill me, though you might have,” she said. “You gave me my life. That is payment enough.”

He waved one hand, and dismissed her words. But she knew she was right. He had risked his life, and the lives of his family, to keep her safe.

She listened as he called his mother and sister on a track phone. When Steve hung up, he did not look relieved, as she had hoped he might. Their situation was grim, but she had had an idea while she slept, an idea she would pursue once they reached Athens, something that might keep him safe. Until then, she offered what comfort she could, knowing that it would not be enough.

“The Brotherhood is hunting us,” Addy told him. “Even if my sister’s glamour fails, they’ll leave your family alone until they’ve caught you. They’ll make you watch while they kill them.”

“What a cheerful thought,” he said. “So, as long as I’m alive, they’re safe.”

“If the Brotherhood holds to its old pattern, yes.”

“That’s chilling. I thought I knew those people.”

“It is hard to know another,” she said. “To know them truly. But the guilt they serve is your father’s burden, not yours. You should let them go.”

“If they ever let me go, I’ll be quick to return the favor, believe me.”

Addy smiled, pushing aside her almost constant need to hand out advice, platitudes that he did not need, words that offered little help.

“You’re right, of course. We’ll make them stop chasing you, and you can get your life back,” she said.

“How on god’s earth will we do that?” he asked as they boarded the plane.

“It is God’s earth. Many things are possible here,” she said. “Good things, as well as bad.”

He settled into the seat beside her, taking off his jacket, lined with silk, the patches on the elbows more worn than they had been when she first met him only the day before.
