16 > SURVIVAL AS A PEOPLE

Survival of the Jews as an identifiable people produces envy of seeming immortality but to the Jew hater is has other significance as well.

Survival despite all-out efforts at extermination provides possibilities, proofs, and frustrations for the anti-Semite that fuel fear, anxiety, rage, and hatred. Relative to the degree of sickness, the following is a list of at least partially unconscious feelings and beliefs.

The Jew is “special after all.” His specialty is summed up by his presence generation after generation as the external and insidious stranger. Survival is interpreted as special.

Resistance to obliteration is felt as inappropriate obstinacy. While death would indicate appropriate compliance to not being wanted, assimilation would at least be felt as conventional but perhaps polluting to the general population.

Survival is felt as an arrogant insult—a splinter in the eye, an individualistic non-fitting and creating of an imperfection to potential total integration and smooth wholeness of the entire population.

Survival in a world in which nothing survives is proof of God’s protection—or is it evidence of protection of the Devil and an extension of him and all that is different and therefore evil?

Dependency on Jews as scapegoats—as the means to express and to justify irrational anger—makes their survival desirable, creating internal conflict in the anti-Semite. He feels confused and ambivalent. He needs the Jew as victim and needs him to die, to become extinct, too. Remember, for many anti-Semites, the Jew provides a central, common, integrating focus—a raison d’etre.
