What secrets does that small mind hide,

That outwardly does not disclose

A single thought that runs inside,

But sits apart and only shows

A half-closed eye and, puffed with pride,

Sees all, hears all, but tells nothing.

A business talk, a hasty word,

Discreetly silent so that he

For all the world might not have heard

That confidence twixt you and me,

Which holds its secret, for the third

Sees all, hears all, but tells nothing.

EARLY MORNING

A gentle pat upon my face,

A purr, a miow, a soft embrace,

Awake to find a small black face

In great anxiety.

On such a morn, it softly said,

It simply could not stay a-bed

With sky-larks singing overhead

And flying from tree to tree.

So would I kindly let him out,

That he could play and roam about

And watch a worm or two come out,

Such fun, so much to see.

So with a stretch, a sleepy yawn,

I stumbled out into the dawn,

Rabbits, birds, dew on the lawn,

How right, no bed for me.
