After scrubbing myself in a shower and dressing in comfy clothes, I made my way to the kitchen first because I was starving. Pushing open the door to the kitchen, I paused when I saw Kalila tidying up. She was humming away, her back to me, and I knew if I didn’t say anything I might startle her. I waited until she put down anything breakable before I cleared my throat.

Kalila whirled round with the grace of a dancer, her lips curving into a smile when she saw me. “Raven, come, come, let me get you something to eat.”

I strode further into the kitchen area. “No, I can help myself. But you can sit with me while I eat if you want.”

The angel frowned at me as I went to the pantry and took out some bread and meat and just put the meat in the bread and bit down as I walked back to the counter. Kalila had already made me a tea, and I thanked her, then told her to sit down with me.

She looked like she wanted to argue, but then perched herself on the chair opposite me. We didn’t say anything for the longest time and although it felt like Kalila wanted to say something to me, I gave her the space in the silence to decide that for herself.

“I think that you are very brave for what you did.”

I let loose a snort, unsure which part of the last few days Kalila was referring to. The angel pursed her lips together in a frown and I set my mug down on the table. “I’m really not sure which part of the past few days you mean and I’m trying hard not to think too hard so you might need to elaborate.”

Kalila twirled a finger around a strand of hair, her cheeks pinking. “For fighting off Abraxas. He might be a member of the League but I abhor any creature, angel or human, who could do such a crime to another person.”

Lifting my gaze to Kalila, I understood her words and the numbness I’d been feeling subsided to be replaced by a rage for whatever monster had forced themselves on Kalila, the most sincere and good of any angel I had ever met. “Tell me who did it and I’ll cut out their heart and give it to you.”

Kalila blinked, then wet her lips. “You would do that without even knowing the story. You do not know me.”

“In the months since I was dragged out of the abyss, you have treated me with nothing but kindness. You didn’t look at me like I was human scum and I appreciated that. You might be too nice to seek revenge but I have no problem in doing it. And you don’t have to tell me what happened.”

“It was,” Kalila said, looking out the window. I wondered if what happened with Abraxas had triggered her, and she needed to explain to someone who had been through a similar experience so I let her, even if the memory was still sharp and jagged in my mind.
