The Shirt off My Back

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

John (the Baptist) answered, “The man with two tunics

should share with him who has none,

and the one who has food should do the same.”

LUKE 3:10-11

The weather was perfect—clear skies, 82 degrees, and only a slight breeze. Adam Locke, a twenty-six-year-old from Cleveland, was flying the single-engine Cessna 182 Skylane while his younger brother, David, studied the map spread out on the panel in front of him.

David had graduated from Ohio State a few weeks ago, and he and Adam were heading to Florida to celebrate. Their flight plan called for them to stop at the small airport in Rock Hill and refuel, and David’s job was to make sure they found it. Charlotte was just ahead, so they were getting close.

“How about a landmark, David?” Adam asked. “There’s Charlotte off to our right, and we need to stay away from that airport.”

David glanced up from the map and looked over at the city’s skyline.

“There’s the Panthers stadium,” he said, pointing to the distinctive structure in the middle of a cluster of large buildings. “We just need to find the 77 Interstate and follow it south.”

He searched the surrounding landscape until he located the wide and winding gray ribbon.

“Look, Adam—there it is.” He pointed. “Follow it south until we come to a big river. Then we’ll head east. We’re pretty close.”

The Cessna made a smooth correction and the city of Charlotte was soon behind them.

“That must be it, the Catawba River,” Adam said, nodding down at the dark green meandering waterway. “Can’t be far now.”

He turned east, and as the plane settled again, they both heard it.

It was only a tiny pause in the otherwise smooth and constant hum of the engine. But it had been there, and they looked at each other. Then the plane trembled slightly, and Adam quickly glanced at the control panel.

“Oh no!” he exclaimed, staring with shocked disbelief at the fuel gauge.

“What’s the matter?” David asked, following his brother’s horrified stare.

Sharon Brothers and her partner, Charlie, were pulling out of the ER parking area when the call came in.

“EMS 2, respond to a plane crash off Mt. Gallant Road, near the intersection with Twin Lakes,” the dispatcher excitedly instructed.

“A plane crash?” Charlie repeated incredulously. “That can’t be right.”

Sharon picked up the radio and said, “Dispatch, this is EMS 2. Did you say ‘plane crash’?”

“That’s right, Sharon. A small plane came down. Single-engine, apparently. Don’t know anything about survivors, just that someone out there saw it go down and called 9-1-1. You and Charlie need to get out there. I’m notifying the fire department and police as well.”

“10-4,” Sharon said, looking over at her partner. “We’re on our way.”

She flipped a couple of switches on the dash, and the ambulance screamed out onto the highway, its lights flashing.

When they arrived at the scene of the crash, a few cars were pulled over on the side of the road, and a young boy was excitedly motioning to them.
