You can delete playlists you no longer need by long-pressing them in the Playlists section of the Library and selecting Delete. Note that deleting a playlist does not delete the list’s songs from your device.
Google Music
In mid-2011, Google joined Apple, Amazon, and other technologies companies in providing an online streaming music service, technically called Music Beta by Google, but referred to by pretty much everyone as Google Music. A few things differentiate Google Music from its competitors. First, it is, at least as of this writing, free for up to 20,000 songs. And second, because it is from Google, it enjoys a close association with Android.
Signing Up and Uploading Your Collection
To use Google Music, you need to sign up for the beta. To do this, you must visit http://music.google.com and use your Google account to request an invitation. If you know someone who is already using Google Music, that person can send you an invitation as well. As of now, invitations are only being made available to those in the United States, but the company has said that it plans to make the service more widely available later.
Once you receive your invitation in your inbox, you can return to the website and get started. The first thing you will need to do is upload your collection to the service, which is quite easy thanks to the free Music Manager application that can be downloaded from the site and is available for both Windows and Macintosh. Enter your Google username and password into the application, then point it at the folder or folders in which your music is stored to begin uploading. Then wait. It took the service the better part of a weekend to upload my collection, currently at just under 10,000 songs. A nice feature of the service is that it will continually monitor your selected folder or folders, so as you add new music, it will be automatically uploaded.
Once you have your music online, you can listen to it from just about anywhere by simply visiting music.google.com again. All of your albums will display (see Figure 8.8). Simply select the album you want to hear and click the Play button at the bottom of your screen.
