Professor Ramfatty had been chosen because he knew more than anyone else about the history of the Island of Fattyfer, on which he had written a hundred and twenty-three volumes. The Chancellor thought that his vast knowledge would come in handy if the Thinifers should raise this question again.

But most people in Fattyborough were sorry that he had been chosen, because he was considered to be rather bad-tempered. He was descended from one of the very few families which were known in Fattyborough as "pure Fattys".
