Laurel stalked back toward the house, beyond exhausted. Everyone had been out all day talking to all their neighbors, herself included. She’d organized everything at warp speed, then about fifteen of them had split up and gotten to work. She’d just left her wolf shifter escort when they’d reached the orchards—it still felt kind of strange to think about so many supernaturals in their territory now.

And she was trying desperately not to obsess over Cale, the dragon from yesterday. She hadn’t seen him all day and she hated to admit that she’d been hoping to maybe be paired up with him. Which was stupid. He wasn’t her type at all.

He was too charming. Too handsome. Far too big.

Aaaannnd he was currently walking right toward her, his long, muscular legs eating up the distance as he broke into a jog. Where the heck had he come from? It was like he’d appeared out of nowhere.

“Hey, Laurel.” That affable smile firmly in place, Cale fell in step with her so casually. “Are you just returning home so late?” He frowned a little as he sniffed the air.

“Ah, yes. What’s wrong? Why are you sniffing… Oh my God, are you smelling me?” Did he think she smelled bad or something? She’d been out all day, maybe she was ripe. The thought was beyond mortifying and she started to take a step away from him, even though he was walking next to her.

“Who were you with today?” he demanded instead of answering.

She blinked up at him, then snorted. “Excuse me, do you think I answer to you or something?”

He cleared his throat. “Ah, I meant…who were you with today?” His tone was slightly less accusatory, but it was still the same question.

“Why does it matter?”

“I smell…wolf. A supernatural. Are you seeing someone?”

She eyed him curiously as they reached the bottom step of her family’s porch stairs. “Again, why does it matter?”

“Because I like you.”

She blinked, surprised by his bluntness. Oh. “Would you care if I had been with someone today? A boyfriend?” Which seemed like an absurd word for some reason.

“Of course I would care.” He growled low in his throat and leaned down slightly. “But it won’t deter me, if that’s what you’re asking. I want you, Laurel, more than I’ve ever wanted anyone. Ever. You smell like sunshine and sweet, ripe peaches.”

The growl that emanated from him sent a shock wave of hunger rippling through her.

And he was just putting it out there, no games—he wanted her. She’d never had a one-night stand before. Never been a risk-taker. Never broken any rules. Had always dated boring analyst types. Then the world had fallen apart and she’d run home, so damn thankful to be alive and that her sisters had made it too.

But she had regrets from her previous life. And in the end, the world had gone mad and there was nothing she could have done to stop it. Certainly not living safely. As she looked into Cale’s vivid, beautiful pale green eyes, she knew without a doubt that she was taking a risk right now.
