A sense of foreboding tightens my chest. I remember the last time I felt like this; I remember the last time I felt like I was walking into a trap. It doesn’t matter that I ignored the feeling when I walked into Philomon Quinn’s warehouse. The point is, it’s there, and my gut hasn’t led me astray yet.

My voice is strained when I try convincing Jaxon to leave Wyler to his fate one last time. “Please, Jax. This doesn’t feel right. We need to turn back.”

“I will not lose another dragon,” he growls.

I guess we’re doing this then. We’re flying straight into the heart of the Whispering Woods, chasing a man who doesn’t want anything to do with us, and potentially walking into a trap. It’s not how I wanted to spend my day, but I’ll do it if it’s what Jaxon needs.

As I veer lower toward the woods, I flick my eyes over the horizon. Straight ahead, sprawling fields of wildflowers and a glistening lake. To the south, dark caves and sand-coloured grass. If I were to take a guess, I’d say the Spring Court lay ahead and the Autumn Court to the south. I don’t know anything about fae politics, but I’m hoping at least one of those courts is an adversary of the Winter Court. Because if the puffs of snow exploding within the Whispering Woods are anything to go by, we’re about to find out just what they want with Jaxon and me.

I watch Jax with rapt attention as he hovers over the tree canopy, looking for an easy way into the dense woods. He finds a gap in the leaves and vines and flies closer, lining his body up with the tiny hole. From this distance, I’m doubtful he’ll fit.

He shifts from his dragon form, leaving only his wings behind, then lowers himself as close to the treetops as possible. Once he’s over the hole, his wings disappear and he plummets to the ground.

I gulp. Partial shifting is difficult; it’s a feat I am yet to master. Much like those pesky ninja skills. Gliding over to where Jaxon disappeared into the trees, I assess my chances of landing without grievously injuring myself. The trees of the Whispering Woods are abnormally large, the fall greater than I can handle. But if I want to help Jaxon, if I want to get him out of the mess he’s diving into, I have to put on my big girl panties and jump.

I have to at least try.

My heart races, pounding against my chest as if in warning. I ignore its plea and lower my gigantic body until my hind legs brush the leaves of the trees. I draw in a breath and hold it. Before I can lose my nerve, I shift, keeping my focus on my wings — I’m assuming that’s how you get them to stay put.

My assumption is wrong. My entire body changes into my human form and I plummet to the ground. Vines whip at my face and branches scrape my skin as I crash through the tree canopy.
