Chapter Nineteen

Two hours later, Nicole waved at Lucas and walked to the table at Anthony’s. He stood when she neared, and warmth flooded her entire body. He was handsome and a gentleman.

He was worth getting to know better. Not that it mattered. She’d already fallen for him the first night. It was only a matter of time before she’d be unable to walk away from his spell.

“You look gorgeous.” Lucas leaned down and placed a kiss on her lips.

Her toes curled in her shoes at the promise of things to come. He pulled out the chair and waited for her to be seated. When she was settled, he returned to his seat.

Her fingers shook, so she clasped them together and placed them in her lap. Now what? The scent of garlic filled the space and made her mouth water. I’m flipping starving. Shit. He’s going to think I’m a pig. He’s probably used to women that eat a salad and nothing else.

“What would you like?” He grasped her fingers and ran his thumb over the flesh on the back of her hand.

“I’ll have a salad.” Fuck. I’m going to starve to death. The sensation of his fingers running over hers shot a spark of awareness along her arm and straight to her center. Her nipples tightened and strained against her silk bra. Lord. He’s only touching my hand.

He rolled his eyes. “None of that.” He motioned for the waitress to come over. “Are you allergic to anything?”

She arched her eyebrows and shook her head. “No.”

“Any foods you find unappealing?” Lifting the menu, he opened it and studied the contents.

Salad. “No.”

“Good.”

When the waitress reached their table, she clasped her pad and pen in one hand. “What would you like?”

“We’ll take two of the specials. A bottle of Malbec. And for dessert, we’ll take two pieces of tiramisu.”

Oh, my God. Nicole bit her lips together and fought the urge to climb over the table and crawl into his lap. The man was perfect.

The waitress tilted her head and looked between the two of them. “Salad?”

Lucas pursed his lips. “No. We’ll only take the good stuff tonight. We’re celebrating.”

The dark-haired woman smiled. “Special occasion? Birthday? Anniversary?”

“No.” He stared into Nicole’s eyes. “Just a date with a beautiful woman.”

Once the waitress left, he lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. “Tell me everything about you.”

“Everything?”

“Yes, everything.”

“There’s not much to tell. I have an older brother and sister. I was the baby and spoiled rotten. My brother is eight years older, and my sister is four years older. They took me everywhere with them.”

“No jealousy between siblings?”

Nicole shrugged. “No. My brother loved to tote me around because girls love a man with a little girl. That got all their ovaries fluttering. Not that it did any good. He’s still single.” She tilted her head. “My sister and I are extremely close.”

The waitress brought the bottle of wine and poured them each a glass. Nicole lifted the liquid to her nose and sniffed. The good stuff.
