Chapter

It was harder to say goodbye to Rob than I had anticipated, but he promised to text me as much as possible. I promised the same and gave him the biggest hug I could before I left. Sometimes, people were just better off as friends.

The others took a long time to say goodbye as well, but we made it to the airport in just enough time to board our flight.

The flight back was relatively somber. Dylan sat with the boys and I wondered if things between us would ever be okay. Could he ever accept me?

It didn’t seem likely.

I sat beside Lisa with Amy and Emma sitting in front of us.

“You okay?” Lisa asked.

I shrugged. “As okay as I can be, I guess.”

“We heard you broke it off with Rob,” Amy said.

I chuckled. “Of course you guys know. Yeah, I did. I just wasn’t sure I could, or should, continue with a guy who acts so different when he’s drinking. I’m trying to get away from that lifestyle. We are still going to be friends, but I doubt it will ever go beyond that.”

Saying it out loud to them made it so much more final and made me a bit sadder.

“Well, look on the bright side,” Amy said with a smile. “Now you can be single and free to date whoever you want.”

“Like a certain broody boy we all know,” Emma said, leaned up and over the seat, and wiggled her eyebrows.

I rolled my eyes. “I think that just means I’ll be single the rest of my life.”

All three of them rolled their eyes.

Dad and Kelly were at the airport waiting for us when we landed. They hugged each of us before herding us into the SUV.

“Did you have a good time?” Kelly asked as she looked in the rearview mirror.

“Loads,” Amy and Lisa said simultaneously.

“Good,” Dad said and turned around to smile at us. “We missed you all, but it was nice to have a quiet house for once.’’

“Well, vacation is over,” I teased him. “The kids are back and your quiet time is gone.”

He sighed loudly and dramatically. “You sure we can’t send them to a boarding school?” he asked Kelly.

She laughed. “They would pay us to take them back.”

“That could be a good scam,” Emma said.

Everyone laughed and then took turns filling Kelly and Dad in on the events. I noticed Dylan avoided talking about the party, which I was grateful for. Even though I hadn’t gotten drunk or anything, I didn’t want Dad asking me questions.

“We really are happy to have you all home,” Kelly said once we made it back and climbed out of the car. She hugged me tightly. “It’s been really depressing.”

“They’re back!” a male voice yelled and then ten adults ran around the side of the house to hug everyone.

Dad pulled me to the side and draped an arm around my shoulders.

“Dad, you sure we didn’t join a cult?” I asked softly.

He chuckled. “They’re not a cult.”

I wasn’t so sure. They lived on the same property.
