Chapter twelve

It’s a bleary, grey afternoon a few days from Halloween and Dawn hasn’t been able to fully wake up. She feels muted, like the sky, though an ever-increasing undercurrent of anxiety runs through her, ever since the night she saw … whatever it was that she saw. Was she dreaming? She can’t make sense of it, of the feeling like electricity dancing, prickling over her skin, of a chasm in the air.

On her way to her bedroom for a nap, fatigue heavy in her joints and behind her eyes, she pauses outside Cody’s closed bedroom door. She imagines she can feel him there, and she thinks about knocking. She can’t know that he is just on the other side of the door, his sweaty back pressed up against it as he shakes, tremors running through his whole body, like he’s shivering in an Arctic cold. He’s clenching his jaw so tightly that his molars grind sickeningly off each other. Cody is coming apart. Or he’s already fallen apart. He’s in a million pieces, floating out of reach. He is just parts, no whole.

She doesn’t know this, and she doesn’t knock.

She climbs into bed fully clothed and is asleep quickly.
