Chapter 19

Ethan

“You’re interrupting my quality time with Star Pirate: The Cruiser’s Quest,” I say with a smirk after picking up Marcie’s call. Lucy and I are enjoying quality time together after a long day in the grape fields. I’m exhausted, but I wasn’t about to screen my friend’s call.

“Tell Captain Carlo to can it - this is worth it.” Her voice carries a familiar tone of authority I’ve come to associate with Marcie. Some would call her bossy, I would say she’s determined.

“There,” I switch off the TV with the remote. “Happy?”

“Yes,” she adds, matter-of-factually. “I happen to have an update on Maymont’s most eligible bachelorette that you won’t want to miss -”

“Marcie, for the love of God,” I sigh back onto the other line. “First the shit with Hannah, then this. You’ve got to cool it. I’m happy where I’m at right now.”

“Generally, I would agree with you, she’s like a dog with a bone sometimes,” Ellie pipes in, the two girls fighting for air time over speakerphone. “But even I think this update is worth talking about. Hannah’s single.”

“No she’s not? She just got back from that big trip with her hotshot boyfriend-”

“Who dumped her at Oak & Chardonnay,” Marcie cuts in. “He’s a mega-ass.”

“The guy was awful to her,” Ellie confirms. “I saw the whole thing and took her home, she was a mess. She could really use a friend right now, and I know you two are close.”

“And I wanted you to know she’s single. Pronto.” Marcie adds. “Before, you know, she swept off her feet by someone else, and you’re left-”

“Or,” Ellie interrupts, “She leaves Maymont without knowing how you really feel… or at the very least, you miss out on the opportunity to show up for her right now. I don’t think it’s the time for a grand gesture… but you should know the board has completely changed.”

It feels like time has stopped while I absorb the information. I take a deep breath to consider this information. Hannah, the girl I’ve been pining over is single. She’s probably hurting, and definitely needs space, but there’s chance that I could make a move when she’s ready. Does it make me terrible to consider this? “When did all this happen?”

“Yesterday,” Ellie says on the other line. “I’m not going to tell you what to do, but at the very least you should stop in and make sure she’s doing ok.”

“I’m going to tell you what to do - you’ve got to make a plan for how you’re gonna confess you’re lovesick,” Marcie adds. “From the way Ellie was talking to Hannah, it doesn’t seem like she’s made up her mind if she’s still going to stay and finish up the inn, or go right back home to Merrit. I hear what Ellie’s saying about giving the poor girl a break, and sure, she’s been through the wringer this weekend, but you won’t have forever to make your feelings known. Hannah is trying to figure out what she’s going to do next right now.
