Despite initial appearances, chess – and this match in particular – was no mere game. A lot had been riding on it, mainly because many had, following Hofstadter and Dreyfus, simply assumed that grand-master chess-playing required a kind of genius – the kind of genius that is the defining condition of human intelligence. As Kasparov explained in 1996:

To some extent, this match is a defense of the whole human race. Computers play such a huge role in society. They are everywhere. But there is a frontier that they must not cross. They must not cross into the area of human creativity. It would threaten the existence of human control in such areas as art, literature, and music. (Quoted in Hofstadter 2001: 40)
