22.2 The Counterfactual
This form is built on base 3 (the middle base), with the suffix -zquia.1 The plural is in -’ (glottal stop).
The way the counterfactual relates to the future is somewhat comparable to the way the pluperfect relates to the preterite, indicating that at a moment in the past an event was foreseen (and so at that moment it could have been spoken of in the future) but as a result of some hindrance, this event did not in fact take place. Possible English translations are: ‘I was going to VERB’, ‘I should have VERBed’, ‘I would have VERBed’, ‘I almost VERBed’, ‘I was trying to VERB’: Ca yèhutl in niquìtzquia
