7.2.4 Pace, pitch, segmentation

As well as tone, the pace of delivery can also be varied to suit the scene – a fast-action sequence benefits from a quicker pace, while a slower delivery would be more appropriate for a lyrical love scene. Often pace is dictated by the speed of the action and the metre of the music that underscores a scene. As well as deliberately speeding up or slowing down, pace is more subtly affected by elements of prosody. Stress, for example, decreases the pace by increasing the duration of an utterance. So too does increased segmentation. For most of an ST, a measured pace will suffice. However, variety of delivery is as welcome as variety of word choice, in refreshing the ear of the listener.
