SERVANT SPEAKING TIP
If you know that your audience will include non-native speakers with limited vocabulary, use common language, avoid vernacular expressions, and beware of figurative (nonliteral) phrases.
Vary Volume
Speaking more loudly and softly is essential in every speech. The best way to emphasize a point is to express it more loudly and then repeat it more softly. In effect, the second, softer vocal expression further emphasizes our point and gives the audience a chance to think more about what we are saying.
Also, we need to vary our volume in tune with our meaning. Shouting is generally a bad idea, although it is essential as part of a story when a character actually shouts, or when delivering some quotations. Whispering works well if we can get extremely close to a microphone. Then a whisper can effectively draw in the audience, as if we are sharing a vital secret.
Vary Vocabulary
We cannot communicate passionately by using the same few words repeatedly. We need to express ourselves using a reasonable range of vocabulary that matches audience interest and ability. Adjectives and adverbs are notoriously very overused, and frequently excessively repeated (as I just demonstrated).
We might consult a thesaurus when writing a speech so we can determine the best words for expressing our meaning. One rule: write with a dictionary and edit with a thesaurus. Then we can speak like we are performing jazz, with variations on a theme. Use fresh but understandable language.
