Murdock rested on a branch, watching Emrys and Raena leave the mountain with two young watchers. He had followed them through the caverns undetected. His raven form was his best disguise. No one was suspicious of a bird in the Saphric Mountains. When they went into a small dwelling Murdock perched outside a window, watching, waiting for something that he could report to his Queen. It didn’t take long for him to discover something substantial.

Murdock could only hear the muffled sounds of their conversation. He couldn’t make out any real words, so he needed to rely on sight to get the full picture of what was happening. All four of them looked tense, but Emrys also looked worried. In all his years as the Queen’s right hand he had never seen her nephew look so concerned. He wondered what feelings hid under the façade. Murdock knew of the things Calla had done, including the lie she told Emrys. His mate might be gone but it didn’t mean he couldn’t love. Murdock worried that the look he was giving his courtesan meant he would soon find out the truth too. He added that to the mental list of things to report back to Calla. He kept a steady eye on the two. Raena’s voice rose, Murdock could hear small pieces of the conversation now.

“Is this some kind of joke?” He heard her say. Her voice shook with the words, Murdock couldn’t tell if she was angry, scared or both. Then, everything changed. Emrys reached behind her neck and removed a piece of jewelry that lived there. The second it was unclasped Murdock was blinded by a bright light. When his raven eyes adjusted, and he could see where this light came from, he was shocked. It was the girl.

Light exuded from her pores like she was made from the sun. It glimmered on her skin like diamonds. After a moment the brightness wore down and she sat there, a golden hue around her. Emrys held her hands in front of her face and her eyes went wide. She did not know of her power. She did not know she was fae, Murdock realized. Her light could only mean one thing, she was a light fae from Aldrazae. He thought of how angry this was going to make his Queen. There were no light fae in Elysian, and it was not an accident. After the war when the kingdoms merged, Calla used her power to suppress the light of all the light fae. They could not band together and fight her darkness without their light. She told the kingdom it was for their safety. That the light fae were traitors and wanted to usurp the throne. She needed to conceal their powers to keep Elysian safe. The people had bought it without a second thought. Who would question the woman who just avenged the death of her brother, the king, and saved the kingdom?

Murdock knew though, that it wasn’t the truth, and Queen Calla was not the savior the people thought her to be.
