Number Three

Sam picks up the phone. “Hello.”

“Sam, this is Gordon Osborn.”

“Mr. Osborn, how may I help you?”

“Why have you been avoiding me?”

“Probably because I have no use for you.”

Sam hears a loud inhale and figures he is about to encounter what Gordon Osborn is famous for. True to Sam’s prediction, Gordon launches into a full-on attack. “Mr. Milton! I have invested fifty thousand dollars in you, and I don’t intend to lose a dime of that investment. In fact, I expect to gain substantially from it.”

“Mr. Osborn, let me correct you. You didn’t invest fifty thousand dollars in me. You invested fifty thousand dollars in twenty percent of the fifty million you expect to get from my case.”

“My fee is 40 percent, and I do not plan to lose 40 percent of anything.”

“I’m glad to hear you suggest that you will take 40 percent of anything, because you need to get up to date, Mr. Osborn. The price of the resolution has gone up substantially. It was as high as seventy-five million.”

“That is very good news, but what do you mean by ‘was up to seventy-five million’?”

“Miss León pissed me off, and I raised the amount to seventy-five million. She has since atoned for some of her bad behavior, and the price has been reduced back to fifty million.”

“I’m curious, Mr. Milton—how did Miss León atone for her bad behavior to earn back twenty-five million dollars?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Osborn, but I cannot tell you. Chantell and I have a silent clause as part of our negotiations. She has kept that part of the contract, so I intend to keep mine.”

“You have entered negotiations with the León party without the input of your lawyer?”

“Mr. Osborn, I never asked you to be my attorney, and I have no written agreement with you for such services. The only thing I received from you is information about a video clip that had come onto the market. I never agreed to have you purchase it, and I never suggested that you take such action.”

“Mr. Milton, do you know what legal intent is?”

“No, not really, and I really don’t—”

Gordon pushes forward. “Let me articulate the legal ramifications in a way you can understand. The very fact that we discussed details about the case, and even exchanged evidence as to a resolution, will be seen by a jury as a substantiated verbal contract between us. You should also know that all of our conversations have been recorded, including our first phone conversation. Therefore, Mr. Milton, I would strongly suggest that I be invited to any and all further conversations or negotiations you have with the León party. Otherwise, you may find yourself on the wrong side of a contract dispute between us.”

“Mr. Osborn, I will tell you what I have told the news media: I have nothing worth taking, and after this is finally resolved, I expect to have nothing worth taking still. So, good luck to you, Mr. Osborn.”

“I see. It may interest you to know
