Lack of Evidence: Hill Cumorah Location, Final Battles and Archeology

The last sentence of the preface to each edition of The Book of Mormon, the story of Smith’s series of annual trips to a hill “convenient to the village of Manchester, Ontario county in New York (which hill is commonly known as the Hill Cumorah)” reads, “The ancient record, thus brought forth from the earth, as the voice of a people speaking from the dust, and translated into modern speech by the gift and power of God as attested by Divine affirmation was first published to the world in the year 1830 as The Book of Mormon.”309

The Hill Cumorah is only a short distance from Smith’s home. Before the golden plates were extracted from the hill, Cumorah apparently held various treasures. Brigham Young claimed: “There were a great many treasures hid up by the Nephites. Porter [Rockwell] was with them one night where there were treasures, and they could find them easy enough, but they could not obtain them.”*310

Consensus was that the Smiths were preoccupied with the neighborhood hill.
