WHEN WE WAKE UP, WE’RE on Eler.

My jaw drops when I look out the window of the spaceship. Sani was right. His planet is beautiful. There are big pink trees with fruit that looks like the cute love-child of a cherry and an orchid, fields of shimmering translucent blue grass, and shining castles that look like they came straight out of a Nordic fairytale. You wouldn’t have guessed that a civil war occurred in a place like this.

Sani holds my shoulders. “What do you think, Prudence?”

“It’s gorgeous.”

“Ready to go outside?”

“Uh, the air is safe for me to breathe, right?” I’ve read a couple of sci-fi books where people suffocated as soon as they stepped onto a new planet.

“Yes. You’re my mate. I would never lead you into a dangerous situation.”

His words bring a smile to my face. Although I literally met Sani less than 24 hours ago, I trust him completely. So I take his hand.

To my relief, when we step onto the blue grass, I don’t start choking.

He pulls a piece of fruit off one of the pink trees. “Do you want to try a raereaux?”

I hold the alien fruit. I should try it. After all, I’m going to be Sani’s mate. I’ll have to consume Eler’s food sooner or later. I bite into the raereaux. Sweet, delicious juice spills onto my tongue. It’s like a persimmon with a hint of a lemon’s tartness. Quickly, I devour the fruit. “Could I have another one?”

He picks another raereaux. After he hands it to me, he runs into the spaceship and comes out with a sack. Then with superhuman—or, in this case, super-alien—speed, he rips the fruit off the branches until the tree is completely bare. With obvious pride, he holds up the sack, which is full of the raereaux. “For you to enjoy later.”

Laughter climbs out of my throat. “Thank you, Sani.”

“Do you wish to walk to my home or use the transporter?”

Normally, I would be all for the option with the least amount of physical activity, but I want to see more of Eler. “Let’s walk.” I frown at the sack. “Wait, are you going to be okay carrying all those raereaux?”

“Why wouldn’t I be okay?”

“Isn’t that sack heavy?”

He blinks. “No,” he says without a hint of false bravado.

Hopefully, our kids get their dad’s speed and strength. “Are you considered unusually strong on Eler?”

“Not really.”

Oh Lord, I am going to be a timid shrimp in a sea of great white sharks. Maybe I should return to Earth.

“If you get tired of walking, let me know,” he says. “I’ll carry you.”

The edges of my lips curve up. I know I’m not leaving Eler.

Once we’ve walked across the fields, Sani says, “Welcome to Qanxer, the capital of Eler.”

I look around my surroundings in astonished silence. Qanxer is like a cross between a medieval Nordic village and a futuristic metropolis. There are small brown cottages and tall skyscrapers, mountains and flying cars, wooden windmills and hologram billboards. And towering above all of that are the shining castles.
