CHAPTER TEN

Holly talked herself around in circles until she cracked and called Ezaray.

"Holly?"

"Zee. How did you know it was me?"

"Zachary recognized the number as the cell Asher leaves at the safehouse. Are you all right?" Ezaray rushed out her explanation and anxious concern filled her last words.

"No. Maybe. I'm fine. I just… What do I do next?"

"We'll be right there." Zachary's abruptness echoed over the line.

"Don't leave your family. I only need to talk, if you have a few minutes."

"We've already left. We're almost to Alder Ridge. Stay at the safehouse. We'll be there soon." Ezaray hung up. Holly stared at the phone in her hand. She'd put herself in a bare den of a house and had nothing to do but pace. The blank walls keeping her safe from reality and from herself, but the light coming through the opening called to her. Called her name and told her to live.

With nothing to do after an hour of driving herself crazy, she cooked, but she chose the most unhealthy lunch she could find.

All the women in the fighting ring had cooked for themselves. They'd turned the lounge of that floor into a kitchen and food had always been available, but only healthy options. Bland, monotonous, pre-portioned, vitamin-rich, healthy foods. Tyrone wouldn't risk losing money by having fighters who weren't healthy. One of the easiest ways to ensure that was to control what they ate.

Holly found a bag of nacho chips and groaned. She spread them out on a baking sheet and pulled out everything she could find from the cupboard and fridge. Topping it all with a mountain of cheese, she put them in the oven and poured small bowls of salsa and sour cream. By the time the oven beeped and she had them out and dished onto a plate for herself, she heard the thudding of paws outside.

Ezaray walked through the door, her eyes darting everywhere until they landed on Holly. Zachary sauntered in behind her. Holly stood to meet her friend. This was the first time she'd seen her as a woman and not an animal since they escaped. When she expected Ezaray to hug her, she didn't. She grabbed Holly's face and turned her head from side to side, then lifted each arm, inspecting her body.

"No feathers?"

"Very funny. No feathers, for now."

"Not, for now, Squirt. No more hiding."

"I agree with Zachary, Holly. You can't hide anymore. Your parents need to see you, even to at least talk to you."

"I know." To be honest, she had pushed thoughts of her parents to the side while she maneuvered how to deal with a mate she wasn't ready for. But the reminder of them added more weight over her head. Reality was suffocating her. There was no way for her to just pick one thing from the pile and start a new journey. It all called to her at once.

"Did you talk to him after I left?" Zachary stood behind Ezaray, looking at Holly over her head.

"Yes, he knows everything now.
