Burke sipped coffee, pushing through the week's tribulations. He approached things in much the same way as Cummings: "One of his methods is a lifetime habit of mine," Burke said. "Namely, the use of three-by-five index cards to sort, assign, and deal with each day's tasks." When all the cards were gone, that must mean the program was over, but lately Burke had been constantly asking one of the secretaries to please go fetch him another pack.

After awhile, Cummings himself walked up to Burke and needed to talk. He said, Look, we don't have any time to put together a bid spec for the TV and do the dance of competitive bidding. That'll take forever. Let's just pick one good company and go with them. Burke rested his Java mug and gave Cliff both ears. Cummings liked Rca, who had even done a bunch of work already on a Ranger television setup back when it was going to be just another piddly experiment on the roster. That year, the company had triumphantly introduced the world's first completely transistorized video camera. So if anybody could make a space camera, it was Rca. Burke liked the plan. Cummings then flogged his single-source idea to Nasa man Ed Cortright, who helped keep pace by immediately signing off.
