Chapter 10

Darien stood inside the doorway to the library, blinking at his surroundings. When he and Mia were in high school, Mia visited the local library whenever she could. Darien had always teased her about wanting to be a librarian, but he thought it was admirable. Mia was smart and belonged in a place like this, a repository of knowledge. Whereas she could pore over books and manuscripts, get excited about a finding, and chatter on about it, Darien preferred to listen while quietly strumming his guitar and creating new tunes.

They were opposites, opposites who attracted. Mia was the one excited by finding information and Darien was the one thrilled by the beauty of song.

Sadly, the thrill was gone. And so was the inspiration.

In their place was money, sure, but there was nothing inspiring about that. Or the fame, the groupies, the corporations courting him for sponsorships...

Darien pushed the thoughts aside as he walked to the circulation desk, his tail relaxed and swaying behind him. This was the stuff he kept inside—the stuff no one, especially not his manager, knew. He was glad he finally told Mia the truth. Now he hoped he could turn everything around and make it right again.

He placed the palms of his forepaws against the surface of the desk and smiled at the pretty, multi-colored calico feline behind it. “Hi there,” he said. “I’m Darien Shaw and I’m looking for Mia Reynard.”

“Oh, right! Of course you are!” the cat squealed, holding her forepaws up to her chin, her whiskers twitching with excitement. “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!”

This was one of the things that also used to give Darien a thrill, being recognized and gushed over by adoring fans... until they wanted something from him. Something he usually wasn’t willing to give.

“I’m sorry for fan-girling, but can I please tell you I have loved your music since I was in high school? Your lyrics really speak to the heart, you know? Do you mind if I get your autograph? I hope that’s okay with you. Mia told me you would pop in today and I brought your debut CD, if you wouldn’t mind signing it.”

Darien let out a long breath and relaxed even more. This was the kind of fan he didn’t mind so much, one who really listened to his music and wasn’t looking for anything more than a smile and a signature. “I’d love to. What’s your name?”

“Abigail Fitch. I started at the high school the year after you and Mia graduated, so I never actually got to meet you.”

“Very cool. I’m glad we finally get to meet, Abigail, or do you prefer something else?”

“Abby, please!”

Darien nodded and wrote a personalized message on the liner notes with the silver marker he kept in his jacket pocket at all times. After he finished writing, he offered the CD to Abby, and she clasped the CD case with both paws as she read Darien’s message.

“Thank you so much,” she said, calmer but still flushed with excitement.
