Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Football is a game that requires teamwork. On every play, eleven individuals must lose themselves for the identity of the team. Sure, some players get more individual recognition on certain plays. Still, for the team to work properly, the individuals must place their teammates and the overall team objectives above self. Eleven men giving themselves up every play of the game—it’s a beautiful thing to watch. It is also oftentimes very apparent when this isn’t happening. If a team is made up of people who are in it for themselves, the results are inevitably suboptimal.

In the business world, or any organization, even families, there is often the need for teamwork. Whatever the situation, the requirements for being a great teammate are the same. Love and trust are vital.

The apostle Peter spoke to the early church about growing in faith and character, and about how this would ultimately prove that their faith was true. In the verses quoted at the beginning of today’s reading, he actually uses two different Greek words to describe different kinds of love. The word phileo is translated “brotherly affection” and refers to the love you feel for your good friends. The other kind of love described in the New Testament is called agape love. This kind of love should be like God’s love: unconditional, sacrificial, impartial, not expecting anything in return.

This week, let’s ask our Father to make us great teammates. Whether at work, on a sports team, or in our homes, let us seek to be people who are worthy of trust and who are growing in our ability to love as brothers and sisters, and as our Father loves.
